Press release

I Can’t Breathe - Black Lives Matter Roma è organizzata dalla studentessa romana 25enne Denise Berhane e dalle associazioni Women’s March Rome, Women’s March Naples, Extinction Rebellion Rome International, 6000 Sardine, Neri Italiani - Black Italians (NIBI), FridaysforFuture Rome, American Expats for Positive Change, Italiana Fraternità Haitiana, Giovani Europeisti Verdi, U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice – Rome.

I Can’t Breathe - Black Lives Matter Roma is a demonstration against systemic racism both in America and around the world, which will be held in the center of Rome. It will start at 11 AM on Sunday, June 7th, 2020, in piazza del Popolo (which is subject to change, please check the event details with the contacts below).

This peaceful demonstration is being organized by a coalition of Italian and American organizations to protest the violence and systemic racism that denies African Americans and people of color their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I Can’t Breathe - Black Lives Matter Roma has been organized by Denise Berhane, a 25 year-old Roman student, along with Women’s March Rome, Women’s March Naples, Extinction Rebellion Rome International, 6000 Sardine, Neri Italiani - Black Italians (NIBI), FridaysforFuture Rome, American Expats for Positive Change, Italiana Fraternità Haitiana, Giovani Europeisti Verdi, U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice – Rome.

I Can’t Breathe was what George Floyd said while he was being arrested by police on May 25th in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He said it while Derek Chauvin, a police officer, held his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, long enough to kill him. George Floyd has become the latest symbol of systemic racism that continues to pervade the United States and other nations. This demonstration is also dedicated to the events in Macerata, in Florence, and it is dedicated to Jerry Boakye, now paralyzed, and to Soumalia Sacko.

Sunday’s peaceful demonstration will conclude a week of physical and online events which have been organized across Rome to remember George Floyd, and to voice our condemnation of police brutality. The final words of George Floyd have galvanized the world.

We believe that justice will be achieved by uniting our voices.
