COMUNICATO STAMPA – 25.7.2006 – Diffusione immediata
Mercoledì 26-7-06 alle ore 16, davanti all'Ambasciata degli Stati Uniti a Roma in via Veneto, gli Statunitensi per la pace e la giustizia* terranno un sit-in per chiedere il cessate il fuoco immediato e incondizionato nel Libano.
Il gruppo di cittadini americani contesterà in particolare le manovre dilatorie di Condaleeza Rice, Segretario di Stato americano, presente a Roma per il summit su Libano. “Lei chiede sì il cessate il fuoco con urgenza, ma a condizioni talmente onerose per i Hezbollah da provocare necessariamente il loro rifiuto”, dichiara la lettera indirizzata a Rice che il gruppo di americani cercherà di consegnare all'Ambasciata. “Ma mentre Lei, come Nerone, contempla indifferente il Libano in fiamme, centinaia e centinaia di innocenti muoiono.”
”La sua è dunque solo un pacifismo di facciata – conclude la lettera – mentre noi chiediamo un impegno pacifista vero. L'amministrazione Bush non deve lasciar allargare il conflitto a Siria e all'Iran, per poter poi cercare di mettere le mani anche su questi due paesi e sulle loro risorse petrolifere e minerarie. Ma temiamo che questo sia la vera posta in gioco.”
Parlerà al sit-in la giovane pacifista americana Jean Rohe, che fece scalpore lo scorso maggio quando, alla sua cerimonia di laurea della New School University di New York, tenutasi nel Madison Square Garden gremito di folla, ha apostrofato dal palco il senatore John Mc Cain, invitato d'onore, fautore delle “guerre preventive” e aspirante candidato repubblicano alla Casa Bianca per 2008.

PRESS RELEASE - July 25th 2006 – Immediate release
Rome (Italy) -- Tomorrow, Wednesday July 26th, 2006 at 4 pm, the group U.S. Citiznes for Peace and Justice - Rome* will stage a sit-in before the U.S. Embassy in via Veneto to call for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire in Lebanon.
The group intends to protest the delaying tactics of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, who is in town for the summit on Lebanon. “You say you call urgently for a cease-fire in the area, but you nullify the call by attaching conditions that the Hezbullah cannot possibly accept,” states the letter addressed to Rice that the group of Americans will try to consign to the Embassy. “But while, like Nero, you contemplate distractedly Lebanon in flames, hundreds and hundreds of innocent people die each day!”
“Your position is therefore only a pacifism for the press, “ the letter concludes, “while we demand a real commitment to stopping all military action now. The Bush administration cannot let the conflict widen to Syria and to Iran, in the hopes – we fear – of finding a pretext to send our troops in and take over two more countries and their reserves of petroleum and minerals! But this is what we fear the whole conflict is about.”
A young American pacifist will address the group gathered in historical via Veneto: Jean Rohe, who made headlines last May during the New School graduation ceremony, held in Madison Square Garden. In her commencement address Rohe rebuked the guest speaker who was to follow her, Senator John Mc Cain, about his hardline stance on so-called “preemptive warfare”. Mc Cain is a possible candidate for the Republican nomination for presidency in 2008.
*“U.S. Citizens for peace and Justice – Rome” was formed in March of 2005 in order to give voice to dissent against the U.S. policy of wars of aggression. It has grown from 50 to 300 members in its short history, and includes U.S. citizens as well as members of the international community living in Rome.
