Longshore Workers Shutdown West Coast Ports in Protest of War

Solidarity Action in Rome

On May 1, 2008, which is not a holiday in the US, 25,000 workers with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union participated in a strike at all 29 West Coast ports to protest the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Angry with the continued bi-partisan funding of the wars, the dockworkers decided to exercise their poltical power at the ports, declaring May 1st a "No Peace, No Work" holiday.

Read an article on the Log Angeles Times: Dockworkers Take May Day Off, Idling All West Coast Ports

And Reuters: U.S. West Coast ports closed by worker protest

We supported these workers in their opposition to war, taking advantage of the traditional May 1st mega-concert at San Giovanni organized by the Italian trade unions to distribute flyers calling attention to the longshore workers’ strike.

Clarence Thomas of ILWU speaking at an Iraq Townhall Meeting in Oakland on April 24, 2008

Our solidarity statement:

Dear Brothers and Sisters of ILWU,

When our Rome-based peace group learned of your planned May Day strike to express opposition to the ongoing, unjust wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, we immediately felt a strong sense of solidarity and support for your determination and courageous direct action. In spite of the thousands of miles separating us physically, we want you to know that we are right beside you in spirit and in purpose.

As our voices of dissent often seem to go unheard it is all the more vital that we take this and every opportunity to protest against the Bush administration's unbridled travesty of justice, democratic values and civil and human rights. In this way, we can try to help bring an end to the lies, deception and endless violence and killing that only drive lasting peace further away from our reach.

Our group – U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice – was formed in March 2005, on the occasion of the second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, as the result of a common desire to take part in the anti-war protest march held in Rome. Since then, we have continued to find as many ways and opportunities as we can to express our anti-war sentiments and to make our collective voice heard.

On May 1st, a national holiday in Italy, we will take the opportunity to commend your courage and support you in your planned strike by handing out flyers describing and explaining your decision to act. This will take place at Rome's traditional May 1st outdoor concert event, organized by Italy's trade unions. We have also publicized your action by translating your resolution and sending it to trade unions and organizations throughout Italy, where it has been published on dozens of web sites.

Your action is an inspiration for us all and we wish you success in carrying it out, especially in the face of the threat of legal action posed by your employers. We thank you for taking this important stand.

In Solidarity,

U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice
Rome, Italy

Risoluzione presentata all'assemblea del sindacato dei lavoratori portuali (International Longshore and Warehouse Union - ILWU) a San Francisco, California l'8 febbraio 2008

PER AZIONI DEI LAVORATORI
PER FERMARE LA GUERRA

Premesso che

- il 1 maggio 2003, in occasione del Congresso dell'ILWU a San Francisco, sono state approvate delle risoluzioni per esigere la fine della guerra e l'occupazione dell'Iraq;

- l'ILWU è stato in prima linea tra i sindacati ad opporsi a questa guerra e occupazione sanguinosa per il dominio imperiale;

- nonostante tanti sindacati e la stragrande maggioranza del popolo statunitense siano ora contro queste guerre bipartisan e ingiustficabili in Iraq e Afghanistan, i due principali partiti politici, Democratici e Republicani, continuano a finanziare la guerra;

- milioni di persone in tutto il mondo hanno marciato e manifestato contro le guerre in Iraq e Afghanistan senza riuscire a fermarle;

2) il rispettare il picchetto contro la guerra organizzato dal sindacato degli insegnanti il 19 maggio 2007 nei confronti della società di operazioni portuali Stevedoring Services of America nel porto di Oakland, California;

- le minacce di bombadamenti aerei statunitensi contro l'Iran o possibili azioni militari in Syria e Pakistan rischiano di provocare l'allargamento della guerra in Medio Oriente;

Cari lavoratori e lavoratrici dell'ILWU

Roma, Italia

Iraq Deaths Estimator
Did someone tell you that U.S. military intervention in Iraq was over? Not true: we're at it again. This time the pretext to drop bombs is "curbing ISIS" (which was created by the U.S. in the first place, to overturn al-Malaki in Iraq and then Assad in Syria, and is now out of hand. Like what happened to "our" creature al Qaeda in Afghanistan). And the death toll continues to rise...
Write your senators and tell them: "Enough! U.S. out!! Iraq has shown it can curb ISIS by itself!"
